This species is often recorded as "Glossogobius giuris" in East Asian countries’ freshwater ichthyofauna. However, this species exhibits many morphological differences compared to G. giuris from its type locality in the Ganges River. In 2025, Zarei et al. used COI barcoding to clarify the relationships among these "G. giuris". The so-called "G. giuris" commonly found in the Western Pacific region is actually G. laticeps, whose type locality is in Queensland in coastal northern Australia. However, G. giuris is not entirely absent in China; it is still discovered in river systems flowing into the Indian Ocean in the southern Xizang Autonomous Region and western Yunnan province.
